Following this weekend’s strong opening for Goat, Sony Pictures Animation will open its next original feature toon, Buds, on Wednesday, Dec. 22, 2027. The only other movie dated for Dec. 22 is a Universal event title. Both features open in the wake of Disney/Marvel Studio’s Avengers: Secret Wars and New Line’s Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum on Dec. 17.
The pic was previously set for March 12, 2027.
The studio had no details to share on Buds other than it’s an original comedy.
The Stephen Curry produced basketball movie Goat overperformed this weekend, opening to a 4-day of $35.1M, just $2.4M behind the opening of Warner Bros. R-rated female event movie, Wuthering Heights which did $37.5M. Goat beat Wuthering Heights on Sunday and Monday. The pic made $2.8M yesterday to Wuthering Heights‘ $3.5M; Goat‘s running cume now at $38M. There’s a very good chance will win its second weekend against Wuthering Heights and the opening of Lionsgate/Kingdom Story’s I Can Only Imagine 2 with around $13M-$14M.
