EXCLUSIVE: A24‘s big buy out of this year’s Sundance, the Olivia Wilde directed and starring sexy relationship comedy, The Invite, will be opening limited on June 26, Deadline has learned.
As we first told you, The Invite, which received big laughs at its premiere on the Eccles last month in Park City, UT, sold after an intense bidding war between Focus Features, Warner Bros’ new genre label, Sony and more to A24 for $10M+. The multi-Oscar winning studio took North American on the pic. The sale was handled by UTA Independent Film Group and FilmNation.
Seth Rogen, Edward Norton and Oscar winner Penélope Cruz also star in the comedy from producers David Permut, Megan Ellison and Ben Browning. The pic is a remake of the Spanish movie The People Upstairs from Cesc Gay, adapted by Will McCormack and Rashida Jones. The movie follows two couples. Joe and Angela (Wilde and Seth Rogen) are on thin ice, and tonight might be when it all falls apart. Unfortunately, their upstairs neighbors (Edward Norton and Penélope Cruz) are about to arrive for dinner, and everything that can go wrong goes worse.
The Invite reteams Wilde with producer Ellison and Annapurna, following their collaboration on Booksmart.
The Invite scored 91% fresh from 32 reviews coming out of its Sundance premiere.
The pre-July 4th weekend of June 26 has Warner Bros/DC Studios’ Supergirl going wide as well as a new Jackass movie from Paramount. A24 had a great sleeper hit in last summer’s rom-com Materialists starring Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans and Pedro Pascal, that movie grossing close to $108M worldwide.
