It took Christopher Nolan’s multi-Oscar winning 2023 Oppenheimer 595 days to final just over $330M stateside, and it’s taking the director’s The Odyssey just 13 days to outstrip that result.
The filmmaker’s feature take of Homer’s epic poem hasn’t eased one bit with its second Monday charting $14.7M and today looking like $16M+ for what’s bound to be a running total of $320.1M stateside. By EOD Wednesday, The Odyssey is expected to cross $330M+ on its 13th day of release, not only besting Oppenheimer but becoming Nolan’s third highest grossing movie at the domestic B.O. after Dark Knight ($534.9M) and Dark Knight Rises ($448.1M). As we told you, with the arrival of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which has a shot at reaching a North American opening around $200M, Odyssey‘s third weekend looks to ease at most -50%, or $45M.
The Odyssey is already Matt Damon’s highest grossing movie (in a leading role) at the domestic box office.
Bleecker Street’s Crosswalk and LD Entertainment’s Broadway capture film, Hadestown, was No. 2 Monday with $2.2M behind Odyssey. Today is looking like $1.4M with a running total just under $14M. The pic was originally scheduled to have a 5-day night run but is being extended into a second weekend with 1,560 locations.
